The Tales of Alhambra
by Washington Irving
Introductory notes: Ricardo Villa-Real
1987, Miguel Sanchez, Granada
Paperback, illustrated. 308 pages.
Tales of the Alhambra is a collection of essays, sketches, and stories by Washington Irving. After completing his 1828 biography of Christopher Columbus, Irving visited Granada, Spain, and was captivated by its beauty and the historic Alhambra Palace.
With access granted by the governor and archbishop, and guided by a 17-year-old named Mateo Ximenes, Irving was inspired to write this book. Despite his doubts about capturing the palace’s essence, he meticulously recorded his observations and experiences during his stay. Worried that he could not do it justice, Irving wrote, "How unworthy is my scribbling of the place"
