Madame Bovary
by Gustave Flaubert
1957 Edition
Madame Bovary, first published in book form in 1857, is a novel by French author Gustave Flaubert which follows the story of beautiful Emma Bovary.
Married to a doctor, but bored and frustrated with her provincial life, she seeks escape and fulfillment through a lavish lifestyle and then through romance outside her marriage.
Flaubert's powerfully erotic and psychologically acute portrayal of Emma caused a moral outcry on its initial publication, and its author faced trial on charges of obscenity.
Once acquitted however, his novel became a bestseller, ushering in a new age of realism in literature, and is now recognised as a masterpiece and one of the most influential works in literary history.
